# Will I lose data when upgrading?

> Understand what happens to your disk when you upgrade an EDBB VPS and how to keep data safe.

A plan or resource upgrade does not reinstall your VPS. It increases the allocated resources while preserving the existing installation. This is not a guarantee against data loss from interrupted writes, hardware problems or later partition changes.

| Resource           | Required follow-up                                                                   |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| CPU/RAM            | Follow the activation email and perform a full panel power cycle                     |
| Disk capacity      | Verify the new disk size, then extend the correct partition and filesystem if needed |
| Additional IPs     | Configure the assigned addresses inside the VPS                                      |
| Additional traffic | Check the current allowance; a traffic-throttle release does not require a reboot    |

Create and test an independent [backup](/backups) before major changes. A paid [qcow2 export](/faq/upgrades-downgrades/qcow2-export) is a separate service, not an instant snapshot.

Use [Linux disk expansion](/advanced-setup-guides/resize-linux-disk) only if your layout matches its prerequisites, or follow the [Windows guide](/advanced-setup-guides/extend-windows-disk). `lsblk` inspects devices; it does not resize them.
