# Anycast, DNS and VPS location

> Distinguish your VPS location from DNS resolver and authoritative nameserver locations. Understand what anycast and reverse DNS can and cannot show.

A DNS server shown in another city or country does not establish that your VPS is hosted there. Different parts of the DNS process can use different networks and locations.

| Item                     | What it tells you                                                           |
| ------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| VPS service location     | The physical hosting location you selected for the service                  |
| Recursive resolver       | The service answering DNS lookups for your system                           |
| Authoritative nameserver | The server publishing records for a domain or reverse-DNS zone              |
| PTR record               | A hostname associated with an IP address; it is not physical-location proof |
| GeoIP result             | A third party's estimate of an IP address location                          |

## Anycast

Anycast can advertise the same service address from multiple sites. Routing selects an available path according to network policy and reachability; it does not guarantee the geographically nearest site. A resolver provider may process a query outside your VPS country.

## Diagnose the actual question

* For where a service is hosted, check its ordered EDBB location and ask support about any discrepancy.
